How Often Should You Wash Your Beard? (And What to Use)

One of the most common beard care questions we get is: how often should I wash my beard? The answer depends on your beard length, skin type, and lifestyle — but there are some solid guidelines that work for most men. Here's what you need to know.

Why You Shouldn't Wash Your Beard Every Day

Your skin produces natural oils (sebum) that keep your beard and the skin beneath it moisturized. Washing your beard every day — especially with regular shampoo — strips these oils away, leading to dryness, itchiness, and beardruff. Over-washing is one of the most common causes of a dry, irritated beard.

How Often Should You Wash Your Beard?

Short beards (under 1 inch): 2–3 times per week is ideal. Short beards are closer to the skin and can accumulate oil and debris faster, but still don't need daily washing.

Medium beards (1–3 inches): 2–3 times per week works well. Focus on washing the skin beneath the beard to prevent buildup.

Long beards (3+ inches): 1–2 times per week is usually sufficient. Longer beards are more prone to dryness, so less frequent washing helps preserve natural oils.

Active lifestyle: If you work out regularly or sweat heavily, you may want to rinse your beard with warm water more frequently and use beard wash 3–4 times per week.

What Should You Use to Wash Your Beard?

Never use regular hair shampoo or body wash on your beard. These products are formulated for scalp hair or skin — not facial hair — and are far too harsh. They'll strip your beard's natural oils and leave it dry and brittle.

Instead, use a dedicated beard wash formulated specifically for facial hair. A good beard wash cleanses gently without stripping moisture, and leaves your beard feeling clean and soft — not squeaky or tight.

Should You Use a Beard Conditioner?

Yes — especially if you have a medium or long beard. A beard conditioner used after washing helps restore moisture, detangle hair, and improve softness and manageability. Apply it after washing, leave it in for 1–2 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

After Washing: Don't Skip the Beard Oil

After every wash, apply beard oil to your damp beard. Washing removes some of your beard's natural oils, and beard oil replenishes that moisture immediately. This step is non-negotiable if you want a soft, healthy beard.
